UFC Vegas 16: Jack Hermansson vs. Marvin Vettori Preview and Prediction

Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori are in the center of attention at the upcoming UFC Vegas 16. These two middleweights established themselves as top fighters in the division and have every right to hope that they might challenge Israel Adesanya in the near future.

Jack Hermanson +120

The Swed needed one minute and eighteen seconds to defeat Kelvin Gastelum in his most recent fight. A heel hook submission routed the former Ultimate Fighter winner. It was a perfect way for Hermansson to bounce back following his unpleasant loss at home against Jared Cannonier. The American won via powerful KO, interrupting Hermansson’s four-match winning streak.

Throughout his career, the Joker fought many big names, Jacare Souza, David Branch, Thiago Santos, Gerald Meerschaert, and that gives him an edge over Vettori.

The 32-year old is a versatile fighter who knows to finishes both in standup and on the ground, with his boxing background often emerging to the surface during bouts. Hermansson knows how to defend takedowns, but isn’t that good when it comes to avoiding hits from hard punchers.

Marvin Vettori -145

Even though he is No.13 in the middleweight rankings, the Italian is a favorite here. He would step up to replace Kevin Holland, who tested positive two weeks ago, accepting a short-notice bout.

The Italian Dream, as the fans call him, has three straight triumphs, against Karl Roberson, Andrew Sanchez, and Cezar Ferreira. His last loss was against the current title-holder Israel Adesanya, who defeated him via split decision in April 2018. So far, Vettori is the only guy in the UFC who pushed the Last Stylebender to the brink.

He is an excellent grappler, recording nine wins via submission, but only two via knockout, which could be problematic for him in this event.

Prediction

Many see Hermansson as the winner here, and when saying that, we include lots of experts in the MMA community. However, Vettori is the guy who knows how to handle conservative fighters, who don’t attack often. The Italian’s grappling should be enough better than Hermansson’s. Even though the Swed’s stamina is at a high level, Vettori will find a way to overpower the Joker on the ground.

This case is similar to the one when Justin Gaethje jumped in to replace Khabib against Tony Ferguson. El Cucuy was preparing for one fighter but, once getting a new rival, didn’t have enough time to switch his tactics and make a gameplan for Gaethje.
