Mariah Carey is opening up about her journey in a way that she has never done before. In a recent interview, the pop music icon talked about dating baseball legend Derek Jeter in the 1990s.
The book The Meaning of Mariah Carey revisits some of the important relationships in the “Hero” singer’s life.
During a chitchat with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live Thursday, Carey revealed that Jeter being bi-racial was the main thing that attracted her to him.
Nick Cannon’s ex-wife explained: “It was really the main thing about that moment for me. I talk about it in the book because what it is is that just knowing there was somebody out there that was like me.”
As things were going south with then-husband Tommy Mottola, Carey describes Jeter as a real “catalyst” for her to move forward.
Carey revealed: “All my life, when I was a little girl, I was like, one day, maybe I’ll meet somebody who’s similar to me, who won’t look down upon me because they feel superior to me, because I’m not one way or another enough for them.”
The diva also covered her relationship with Jeter’s family: “They’re a beautiful family, I have nothing but glowing things to say about them. I love his sister. His mother gave me a book by Maya Angelou. They are really good people.”
Here is what Carey wants supporters to take away from the book: “Think most people would have expected it to be predominantly about stardom and all of those things, but the intention was to emancipate my little girl self, who wasn’t famous, who didn’t have money, who didn’t feel worthy. I feel like it’s a survivor’s story, and not everybody realized that about me,’ she said, adding there are things in the book that ‘all people can relate to.”
The memoir is a best seller and a stunned Carey could not contain her joy when she wrote: “Wow. I’m stunned, humbled and so grateful. Writing this memoir nearly consumed my life for the last three years. Love you Michaela ❤️Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my story and make this impossible dream a reality 😇🦋 It almost makes it tolerable to have lived through these experiences! LOL 😁 💞💞💞.”
Fans say the success is well deserved.
