Sony has been killing it in the exclusive game title market for many years now. The company has developed an impressive catalogue of amazing titles, many of which have reached iconic status.
There’s God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and, of course, Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Spider-Man just reached a major sales milestone, according to a Sony executive, moving more than 20 million copies around the globe.
This was a feat that was recently also achieved by God of War, another major Sony exclusive title.
Sony has yet to make an official announcement regarding this, but it was confirmed on LinkedIn by PlayStation‘s Senior Manager for Global Brand Marketing, David Bull. Bull posted it after an industry enthusiast by the handle Timur222 first reported the statistic.
Since then, Bull has removed the stat from his page. While this could mean that there was an inaccuracy, it’s more likely that Sony wants to make the big claim in an official capacity sometime in the next week or so.
It’s unlikely that the statistic is false. The game moved more than 3.3 million copies in its first three days, and received rave reviews from practically all corners of the gaming world. It became the fastest selling first party PlayStation title of all time, and held that record for almost two years before it was broken in 2020 by The Last of Us: Part 2.
Back in August of 2019, we had received words that Marvel’s Spider-Man sold more than 13.2 million copies, so it was definitely on track to continue toward the 20 million club.
Attention has recently been placed back on the game with the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is a shorter side story that focuses on Peter’s protégé Miles, and his first major adventure as Spider-Man.
Along with Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man was re-released for the PlayStation 5, fully remastered. Not only were the game’s graphics touched up, but a new Peter Parker face actor was used, which looks an awful lot like Spider-Man movie actor Tom Holland.
With the remaster flying off of shelves as people get their hands on PlayStation 5 consoles, it will be interesting to see how many copies Marvel’s Spider-Man will sell as we slowly inch closer to its inevitable sequel.
Marvel’s Spider-Man follows an original story with a veteran Spider-Man, who has been on the job for eight years. It’s an adult Peter Parker, who has already tangled with a wealth of super villains.
