MGM has announced that they have delayed the Tomb Raider movie sequel indefinitely following its initial March 19 launch date. The reasoning behind the decision is weighted heavily on the continued impact of COVID-19 and what the pandemic has meant for the movie industry as a whole regarding theaters.
While not the only film to be impacted by the continued spread of the virus, the Tomb Raider reboot is the latest in the list of films to have an uncertain future. Starring Alicia Vikander as she reprises her role of a younger Lara Croft, the movie itself also has Ben Wheatley as the director and Amy Jump on the script. Graham King is also the producer for the sequel alongside Elizabeth Cantillon under the GK Films name.
Due to the indefinite nature of the delay, we won’t have a new release date until further notice, but that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost regarding the upcoming film.
As for the first film that took on the rebooted games, Vikander became Lara Croft in the 2018 Tomb Raider movie. Follwoing Croft’s father’s disappearance, our heroine then made a name for herself as a bike courier. When she was arrested following an altercation with the police, her father’s business partner offered Croft a string of hope to follow the trail to find out what happened regarding his disappearance.
As her journey takes her away from everything she has known and into Hong Kong in search of the island Yamatai, the adventure truly begins when she’s forced to survive by any means necessary. The movie itself is an origin tale of how Croft came to be the badass adventurer we all know and love. The movie didn’t get the greatest reception, but it did better than that monstrosity the Blood Rayne films did. That’s something.
