It seems as though Netflix can’t get enough video game content as of late.
The streaming company had a smash hit on their hands last year with The Witcher series, based on the popular books and video games. Then, it was announced that Netflix would be making an original series based on the Assassin’s Creed games.
While both of these are more adult oriented, it seems like Netflix is trying to get into the family-friendly genre with gaming content, as well. It was recently announced (seemingly by accident) that Netflix would be developing a 3D animated Sonic The Hedgehog TV show.
And why not? The SEGA icon is having a bit of a renaissance as of late, with this year’s Sonic The Hedgehog movie delighting viewers of all ages. It even set a new record for the best opening ever for a video game adaptation, unseating the former record holder, Detective Pikachu.

Netflix made the announcement that a new Sonic series was happening in a now deleted tweet that came from its NX Twitter account.
“Rings? Check. Sneaker? Check. Speed? SONIC,” the original tweet said. “SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic The Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ, and @ManOfActionENT, premiering in 2022.”
It was also accompanied by a piece of artwork that showed a red silhouette of Sonic running toward the Netflix logo.
WildBrain is a Canadian kids’ content and brand company that, according to its official Twitter page, puts “creativity and innovation first.” It is best known for being the home of the long-running Peanuts franchise, featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy.
Man of Action is a think tank and development company. This is the studio responsible for shows like Ben 10 and Generator Rex.
It seems as though news of this Sonic The Hedgehog series dropped a bit too early, and Netflix is likely scrambling to put together an official announcement in the coming weeks, now that the cat is out of the bag.
Sonic The Hedgehog is also getting a sequel film, which is going into production in 2021. That movie is set to feature Sonic’s longtime sidekick Tails, and many believe that it could even feature fan favorite character Knuckles.
Sonic is no stranger to cartoon series. The character starred in two series that aired simultaneously back in the 90s, titled Sonic The Hedgehog and Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, respectively. Sonic was voiced by Steve Urkel actor Jaleel White from Family Matters in both of these shows.
There was also an anime series released in 2003 called Sonic X, which followed the plotlines of the SEGA Dreamcast Sonic Adventure games.
This 2022 series would mark the first 3D animated Sonic show.
