Rust is one of those games that would work just brilliantly on consoles, and although many fans of the game were looking forward to the game being released on Xbox (at least) in 2020, you’ll have to wait a little longer.
In a developer blog post from the team at Double Eleven today, it was confirmed that Rust would not be released on consoles at some surprise stage at the back-end of 2020. The release has been pushed back into 2021.

Obviously, it’s been a difficult year for game developers. Adjusting to work-from-home schedules has made it much trickier to push out crucial development work, and the console version of Rust is another to fall foul to this useless year.

This was confirmed in the blog post from Double Eleven:
“As a company in 2020, a year that has brought very challenging times for many, we’ve felt very fortunate to be able to keep doing what we love. We’ve always had some remote workers but moving the entire company home to keep everyone safe has presented challenges as we’ve found new ways to work with each other in the new normal that this year had in store for us. “
However, Rust will still come to consoles, just a bit later than many expected. It was first revealed that Rust would get a console version way back at the end of 2019 with this reveal trailer:
There has actually been very little news from Double Eleven, something which lead to many in the community to believe the console version had been forgotten about.
Thankfully, this blog post clears up a few things – the studio has been silent for so long because they themselves have been disappointed in the progress made during this difficult year: “We haven’t felt ready to share anything with you yet.”
The good news is that Rust will come to consoles. Double Eleven suggests they’ll have something to share about the game in the new year, although there isn’t much more information than that.
Will Rust be ready to play on the next-generation consoles or stick to the original Xbox One/PS4 release as originally claimed back in 2019? Will the game offer cross-platform? These are the questions still rattling around the community.
