The Philadelphia Eagles made a massive upset last night, beating the San Francisco 49ers on the road, 25-20. With this victory, the Eagles are on the top of the NFC East, even though they have a negative record, 1-2-1.
They would stun the hosts, and score two touchdowns in eight seconds during the late part of the final quarter. At first, Carson Wentz hit Travis Fulgham for a 42-yard TD with 5:50 to go, giving the Eagles an 18-14 lead.
Just eight seconds later, on the first play of the 49ers, Alex Singleton intercepted Nick Mullens and returned the football all the way to the endzone, knocking out the home team, who did respond immediately after, but lost the game.
San Francisco’s Jerick McKinnon had a one-yard rush, after which the two-point conversion failed, and the result 25-20 remained active until the end of the game. Though the Eagles went three-and-out on their possession, but CJ Beathard, who replaced Mullens in the meantime, couldn’t complete a rally even though having four attempts from 33 yards away from the end zone.
Mullens lost three possessions, being picked twice, and suffering one strip sack from Cre’Von LeBlanc. All of his turnovers were in the critical moments, and after them, the Eagles created a difference on the field. In the end, he finished the night with one TD pass, 200 passing yards, 18-for-26, and suffering four sacks for 28 negative yards.
That only TD pass went to George Kittle, who had 15 catches for 183 yards, and was the absolute beast in tonight’s match. The shorthanded San Francisco produced just 116 rushing yards, with Jerick McKinnon being the top rusher with 54 yards on 14 carries.
On the other side, Wentz had 193 passing yards, one TD and interception each and 19 negative yards on three sacks. He had one TD on the ground, late in the first, once he rushed for 11 yards, to score the first points of the contest.
Fulgham had 57 receptions on two catches. The 25-year old undrafted WR was promoted to the first team two days ago after the Eagles faced multiple injuries that crippled their roster. He immediately seized the chance and delivered, indicating that he might be an unexpected addition to this team.
The Eagles are now heading for Pittsburgh to face the Steelers, while on the other end, the 49ers await Miami Dolphins. Both matches are on Sunday.
