People are playing chess because of Anna Taylor-Joy’s binge-worthy series The Queen’s Gambit. If you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to tune in and see why the show is hitting number one around the globe. A period piece, the show starts off during the cold war and works its way into the sixties revolution. It focuses on an orphan (played by Taylor-Joy) named Beth Harmon who learns how to play chess while in an orphanage. Not only does she learn the game, but she also becomes addicted to drugs that were administered to the children to keep them in line. Beth becomes a child prodigy and then takes her skills to new heights as she begins to play chess competitively.

The series is only seven episodes and at times, you will think to yourself that you must be watching a true story. The Queen’s Gambit is a pure work of fiction and the television series is based upon the book by Walter Tevis. The limited-series has been praised for its authenticity and depiction of chess.

It’s also a timely work as there are many feminist undertones in the film. Beth Harmon has entered a man’s world and she’s ready to become the best chess player worldwide. There is no room for failure and she will do anything it takes to become the best and achieve her dreams.

The series has not only sparked renewed interest in chess, but more females are taking an interest in the game.

As The Queen’s Gambit has become one of the most binge-watched series this year, fans are interested in knowing if there will be a second season. At this time, The Queen’s Gambit was only set to be a limited, seven-episode series. However; due to its overwhelming success, it is possible Netflix may decide to add another season. At this point; however, it looks like the series is over and done with.
