The song “Monster” is powerful and sees both Shawn and Justin reflect upon the insane pressure to remain perfect that is placed on them as former teen idols. The two entered adulthood fighting against criticism and attacks from those who used social media to harass and berate them on a daily basis.
Shawn Mendes lived with attacks on his sexuality on a near-daily basis and Justin Bieber had the misfortune of being a teen idol who was vilified on a world-scale when his failings and mistakes were tabloid news. The two co-wrote the song with others and it is a reflection of fame, expectations, and how quickly people can turn on their idols when they fall from grace.
