Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn popped the question to National Hockey League star P.K. Subban on Christmas Day, in what she called “a non-traditional move.”
Although the athletes got engaged for the first time earlier in the summer, Vonn said she wanted to give Subban a ring as a display of “equality.”
Everyone talks about equality these days, Vonn noted, adding that actions speak louder than words. “Men also deserve an engagement ring, and I return P.K. the favor by giving him one too,” the skier pointed out.
The skier posted the news on Instagram alongside a festive family photo of herself and Subban with the ring and their three dogs. The couple is wearing matching pajamas in front of a Christmas tree.
The Minnesota-born skier and Canada-native New Jersey Devils player met in 2017 at the Nickelodeon sports show, P.K. said in a recent interview with Vogue. He admitted that Lindsay was dating someone else at that time, but her younger sister, Karin, helped him approach her.
When Lindsey broke up with her then-boyfriend, P.K. reached her out again. For the first couple of months, they were talking on the phone every day while she was competing in Europe.
On Christmas Day, P.K. traveled to Vail, Colorado, by car to meet her in person for the second time. Reflecting on the beginning of their relationship, Vonn said that as she was married before, she did not believe she would find someone special again. After a few months of dating, she knew she wanted to be with him.
They kept their relationship private for nearly a year before making it public in 2018. The love birds are now among the seven percent of couples who propose to each other with two rings, The Knot’s 2019 Jewelry and Engagement Study revealed.
Speaking to Vogue in the summer, the skier emphasized they were not in a hurry to get married and considered the option to move to New Jersey, where Subban is a defense man with the local Devils team. Vonn said she did not want to stress him out with wedding plans ahead of his busy season.
Lindsay Vonn retired from professional skiing in February this year. The Olympic medalist finished her career with 82 World Cup titles and four World Cup overall championships. Besides, she also won three Olympic medals, including gold in Vancouver in 2010.
P.K. Subban won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defense man in 2013 while he was still competing for Montreal Canadiens. Subsequently, he was part of the Nashville Predators team before he was traded to the New Jersey Devils this year.
What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with Vonn that men also deserve engagement rings?
